Reducing Steel Scrap Through Process Optimization

Schaeffler

Objective:
Reduce production scrap and recover material value across critical manufacturing lines.

Solution:

ēolos supported Schaeffler in analyzing and optimizing material flows within their production environment. Through full process mapping and material balance analysis, we identified where most scrap was being generated and assessed opportunities for reduction and reuse. The team proposed alternative processes for the most waste-intensive steps and developed a sorting approach to recover re-usable scrap for internal re-manufacturing.

Description:

With rising material costs and increasing pressure to improve efficiency, Schaeffler sought to minimize steel scrap generated during production. ēolos facilitated a technical deep dive into production lines, identifying high-impact areas and loss points. Beyond identifying issues, the project delivered actionable strategies, ranging from modified workflows to targeted scrap segregation, ensuring that material value could be retained and re-integrated into the process where feasible.

Interesting Numbers:

  • 1,500 tonnes of steel per year identified where material value could be recovered and reused
